Referencing and using sources - Why and when - Plagiarism

Citing and referencing are essential to avoid plagiarism.

Plagiarism is a form of academic dishonesty that incurs severe penalties at QUT. Plagiarism is when you do not give credit to the author/s for information you used in your work.

This includes using any other work without citing and referencing it:

• copying the work of another student
• directly copying any part of another person's work (even if you bought it)
• directly copying and pasting information from the internet
• paraphrasing or summarising someone else's ideas
• using the main idea or thesis from someone else's work
• copying images, data or anything else from somebody else
• using experimental results from someone else's work.

You need to reference to acknowledge using someone else's work!
