A treaty is an international agreement between countries which is governed by international law.

A treaty may also be called a 'treaty', 'convention', 'protocol', 'covenant' or 'exchange of letters'.

For multilateral treaties with more than three signatories, the names of the parties should not be included after the treaty title. Multilateral treaties are generally developed by international organisations such as the United Nations.

Treaties can also be bilateral or trilateral which is an agreement between two or three countries.
