Generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Dall-E generate text or images in response to parameters entered by the user. See Using generative AI for more information.

Information about using and referencing generative AI tools will continue to be updated. Please check QUT cite|write regularly to keep up with any changes.

There are as yet no specific Harvard guidelines for citing ChatGPT or other generative AI tools. In the interim, use the most applicable option below.

Use this if the generated content is included in the assessment or an appendix or is otherwise accessible to the reader.

Note: For in-text citation purposes, the 'author' is the same as the publisher.

If the reader cannot access the source

If the generated content is not included in the assessment or an appendix or is otherwise not accessible to the reader, we recommend that you base your reference on the personal communication template.
